What is the UN OHCHR Humanitarian Funds Fellowship Programme 2026?

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) manages two important Humanitarian Funds that provide direct assistance to survivors of torture and modern slavery through grants to civil society organizations worldwide.

The OHCHR Fellowship Programme is a unique initiative that brings talented young professionals to Geneva to work directly with the Humanitarian Funds Secretariat. Fellows gain practical experience in grant evaluation, research, policy support, outreach, and project management — all while contributing to real-world human rights impact.

This is a working-level fellowship, not just theoretical training. You will be based at the UN Human Rights Office and collaborate with international experts.

  • Number of Positions: Two fellowships
  • Duration: 12 months (with a 2-month probation period)
  • Possible Extension: Up to one additional year (subject to fund availability)
  • Start Dates:
    • 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2027
    • 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2027

Important Note: This is a fellowship programme, not a regular UN staff position. There is no guarantee of permanent employment after completion, but the experience significantly strengthens your profile for future roles in the UN, NGOs, and international organizations.

What Will You Do as a Fellow?

Fellows actively participate in the daily work of the Humanitarian Funds Secretariat. Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating grant applications from civil society organizations
  • Providing technical support and guidance to applicant organizations
  • Conducting research on issues related to torture and contemporary forms of slavery
  • Collecting and analyzing best practices from grantee projects
  • Developing outreach materials (website updates, brochures, social media content, survivor impact stories)
  • Supporting the organization of Board of Trustees sessions and public events
  • Contributing to other human rights activities within OHCHR as needed
