The METI Japan Internship Program connects highly skilled foreign nationals with Japanese SMEs. It promotes internationalization, helps companies expand overseas, and gives participants real-world exposure to Japanese work culture.

Internship Periods and Formats

1. Online Course

  • Dates: August 24 – September 18, 2026
  • Duration: Up to 20 days (approx. 80 hours total, 2–8 hours per day)
  • Location: Remote from your home or workplace
  • Final Presentation: September 18, 2026

2. In-person Course – First Term

  • Arrival: October 7, 2026
  • Departure: November 26, 2026
  • Duration: Up to 30 business days (7–8 hours per day)

3. In-person Course – Second Term

  • Departure: December 20, 2026
  • Duration: Up to 30 business days

In-person participants must follow the JIP Office’s travel schedule.

Eligible Countries for METI Internship 2026

Applicants must be citizens of countries on the OECD/DAC List of ODA Recipients (excluding the People’s Republic of China). You may reside in a different country (including developed nations), but applicants currently living in Japan are not eligible.

Eligible Countries (partial list; check official for updates): Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and many more.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the METI Government of Japan Internship Program 2026, you must meet all these requirements:

  1. Endorse the program’s goals of supporting Japanese companies’ internationalization.
  2. Hold citizenship from an eligible OECD/DAC country (excluding China).
  3. Be aged 18–39 as of August 24, 2026.
  4. Be a final-year university student (undergraduate or graduate) or a recent graduate.
  5. Demonstrate Japanese proficiency (JLPT N3/CEFR B1 or equivalent) OR strong English skills.
  6. Commit fully to all activities and training.
  7. Not have participated in this program from FY2016–2025.
  8. Have a strong desire to work in Japan (unemployed or open to career change).

Required Documents (after passing screening):

  • Certificate of enrollment or graduation
  • Recommendation letter
  • Language proficiency proof (JLPT, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.)

Financial Benefits and Support
